It's been 42 years since Spider-lover, Man's Gwen Stacy, died in the last pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #121 – a tragedy that forever transformed comic book history and was probably Marvel's first acknowledgment that superheroes can't rescue everyone. But what if she wasn't really dead? In an alternative reality, what if Peter Parker died and Gwen Stacy became a kickass superhero with all of Spider-skills Man's plus a lot more angst?

Given that the weight of Gwen's body may increase to approximately 10 times its force while falling at such heights, Spider-Man was just too far away to rescue her - a half-second pause on someone falling at 95 miles per hour might easily shatter their neck. In contrast, Kakalios emphasizes the safety precautions and distances that skydivers and bungee jumpers take while performing their sport, as well as how airbags in automobiles deploy in an accident. So, regrettably, Peter Parker did take Gwen Stacy's life, even if she would have died anyway if he hadn't intervened.
