David Bowie Mural Phoenix

The David Bowie painting in Brixton (Micha Theiner)The Rolling Stones' Bill Wyman was close in Penge. Later, Billy Idol and Siouxsie Sioux would emerge to stardom from the so-called Bromley Contingent that followed the Sex Pistols. Kate Bush, Squeeze, Boy George, and Fatboy Slim were all born in chippy, enterprising south London. Bowie lost his accent as he grew older, then regained it.

Let Your Light Shine On Us

Look at this stunning sculpture in the center of Roosevelt Row. Sentrock's Out Shine On Us is a colorful, sophisticated, and intriguing piece of street art. The painting was completed in December 2017 as part of Phoenix's Central City South Mural Project. Stop near 4th Avenue and Hadley Street in Downtown Phoenix and take your own photo!

So when I stumble across interesting street art while on vacation, I'm overjoyed! Isn't it fun to combine two of your favorite things? Our recent Spring Break vacation to Phoenix, Arizona was one such occasion. I heard Phoenix had some fantastic street art, but I had no idea how much of it there would be. Warning: There is a LOT of street art in Phoenix!

It's a worthy monument, joining other murals and plaques dedicated to the two performers around Massachusetts and beyond. And neither was a stranger to Lansdowne: Bowie performed at Avalon in September 1996 as part of his Outside tour, and Prince performed at Metro nightclub twice: first in March 1981 as part of his Dirty Mind tour, and then five years later at the height of his fame for a secret show that forced police to close down the street once word got out. Unsurprisingly, tribute performances in Prince's honor continue to appear throughout town. Tonight, singer-songwriter Will Dailey performs a Prince homage at East Boston non-profit cultural group Zumix, while the Boston Rock Opera presents Stardust to Blackstar: The Lives of David Bowie at ONCE Ballroom in Somerville next weekend, August 6 and 7.
